Being the smallest province in Cambodia has not prevented Kep from playing an important and outsize role in the Kingdom’s history. During the French colonial times, which lasted for nearly a century, Kep was a favorite haunt for the French elite, including colonial government officials, who built villas and stayed from time to time there to escape the Phnom Penh heat and chaos. It would be natural to infer that many important colonial government decisions were made there. Kep’s popularity with the elite continued even after the French left in the early 1950s. The French were replaced by wealthy Khmers, who were drawn by the seclusion, stunning sunset views, amazing beaches, abundance of seafood, and other good attributes of the tiny province. After conflict engulfed Cambodia, Kep was neglected and went into decline. The once-elegant French-inspired villas were abandoned and fell into disrepair. The economy of the province also suffered and only a few visitors ventured into Kep. After the end of Cambodia’s murderous Civil War and the signing of the 1991 Paris Peace Accords, Kep re-merged from neglect and obscurity, now as one of Cambodia’s most popular tourist destination. Visitors from China, Japan, Korea, United States, Europe, and other parts of Southeast Asia started coming to Kep, drawn by the plentiful and luscious seafood, white-sand beaches, breathtaking sunset views, and the butterfly-filled Kep National Park. The successful emergence of Kep’s tourism industry was a much-needed ‘shot in the arm’ for the province’s previously-ailing economy. Buoyed by tourism, Kep’s economy started to grow. The province’s real estate sector, which was mostly dormant for many years, slowly work up from its long slumber and progressed accordingly. Aside from the villas, Kep now hosts apartments, houses. shophouses, warehouses, and other residential and commercial developments. There are now many houses either for rent or sale in Kep.
