Sangkat Phsar Kandal Ti Muoy is located in the northern part of the capital and mainly located along the popular riverside of Phnom Penh. It is one of 11 Sangkats that form Daun Penh.

The area around Phsar Kandal is very popular with locals, expats and regularly draws a large tourist crowd with its selection of retail shops, restaurants, cafes and the attraction of the Tonle Sap River.

As a key stretch of the core tourism hub and the riverside area, the area is constantly being populated with new attractions, hotels and apartment and business renovations as well as new developments.

It also boasts some of the most historical buildings in Phnom Penh including the Wat Analoum, Phsar Kandal and many iconic hotels & bars and apartments.

Key Information

The riverside in Phnom Penh has seen a number of beautification projects over the years and it has been developed and improved to attract a number of Cambodians and foreigners who take advantage of the wide walkways to exercise and enjoy the sunrises. The riverside is particularly busy during the holidays when fireworks displays light up the sky as it's a great vantage point.

Wat Ounalom (also Wat Unnalom and several other spellings) is on Sisowath Quay in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, near the Royal Palace of Cambodia. It is the seat of Cambodia's Mohanikay order, and is the most important Wat in Phnom Penh, and seen as the center of Cambodian Buddhism. It was established in 1443 and consists of 44 structures - the main complex houses a stupa that contains what is believed to be an eyebrow hair of Buddha and an inscription in Pali.

The Sangkat Phsar Kandal Ti Muoy has a lot of older buildings, some of which have seen wholescale or part renovations and old French-inspired architecture can still be found on some of the street corners. New developments are forever changing the landscape, with the Hyatt Phnom Penh a great example.

Phsar Kandal (Kandal market) is a lively market that has been operational for more than 30 years and also the buildings are in need of repair, several attempts to upgrade the market have not gone ahead.

Sangkat Phsar Kandal Ti Muoy is not only a commercial and tourist hot spot, but also a significant area for Cambodian culture and history. It is located right on the border of the Cambodian Royal Palace and the National Museum.

Traditionally, the area is famous for its art and stone sculpture shops catering for the tourist industry but also popular for supplying cafes, hotels and businesses with Khmer art and sculptures.

Competition is fierce and many shophouses, bars and restaurants along the riverside, and on the streets one block and more away from the river usually demand high rental prices.

There are also small co-working spaces, commercial outlets and businesses which have been established in the area. 

Daun Penh encompasses the well-known riverside area along Sisowath Quay - which overlooks the Tonle Sap river. The wide selection of restaurants, hotels and bars, means it's one of the most popular tourist areas in the city.

In recent years, there have been the addition of new malls, hotels and even more popular bars and cafes.

Khan Daun Penh is one of the most heavily populated districts in Phnom Penh and Sangkat Phsar Kandal Ti Muoy is no exception. 

In 2019, Phnom Penh had a total population of 2.13 million with a population growth rate of 3.92%. The total population density in 679 square kilometres (262 sq. mi) is 3,136 inhabitants per square kilometre. According to the statistics of 2008, the total population of Khan Daun Penh was 126,550, 

Sangkat Phsar Kandal has a healthy mix of Cambodians and international expats and it remains a popular area to live and conduct business in. There are also several schools in this central part of the city and there can be congestion problems when the schools dismiss in the afternoons.

The latest census figures in Cambodia should be released by 2021.

Things To Do in Phsar Kandal I

Daun Penh is among the most popular shopping destinations in Phnom Penh and Sangkat Phsar Kandal Ti Muoy has well-known markets in the district. There are streets with high foot traffic attracting shoppers -this is especially true of tourists during the peak season.

Phsar Kandal is constantly busy and is a well-known wet market in the city catering for many small scale sellers. The restaurants, cafes and hotels in the area also use the market to shop for fresh fruit and vegetables, while many Khmers pack the market at meal times. There are also mobile phone sellers, gold and jewelry stores as well as cash converters around the market.

Street 178 is popular for its many souvenirs, handicraft, clothes, and jewelry as well as paintings.

The selection of shopping malls in the city is large with local, modern and boutique malls. The Quayside mall opened in late 2020 and has already opened a Starbucks, Japanese restaurants and the Rukkha Sky Bar & Tapas.

Sisowath Quay although not a mall; is a good example of a street which is popular with locals, expats and international travelers. Sisowath Quay runs along the riverside and is a mix of shops, apartaments, bars and restaurants which can be busy in the tourist high season.

There are a number of historical, cultural, and tourist landmarks in Sangkat Phsar Kandal. 

Wat Ounalom (it is spelled in different ways in different texts, such as also Wat Unnalom) is located off Sisowath Quay and is the seat of Cambodia's Mohanikay order and the center of Cambodian Buddhism. It dates back to the 15th century and has seen a number of renovations and additions over the years.

Other iconic landmarks are the FCC (Foreign Correspondents Club) which is a restaurant on the riverside and is often cited in guide books.  In 2020 the site was undergoing renovations.

Sisowath Quay, which in essence is the riverside, has undergone several upgrades and beautification projects over the years and is popular for exercising and or simply taking a stroll along the riverbanks in the morning and around sunset. There are also running tracks and a free open air gym which can be used. Sisowath is dotted with hotels, restaurants and bars. The Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh is slated for a Q1 2021 opening, and it will be the first Hyatt hotel to open in the Cambodian capital and is located on St 178.

If you are a food lover and would like to sample the cuisines of many different countries, the riverside and the area of Sangkat Phsar Kandal is a great place to go. 

Along the riverside, you can find restaurants serving multitudes of cuisine from France, Greece, Italy, the USA, as well as many Asian specialties like Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Singaporean and Malaysian, Indian, Mexican and even Middle Eastern food. 

On Sisowath, some of the most popular dining and drinking options are, Juniper Gin bar, 5 Drunk Men, and FCC Phnom Penh. Harry’s and Cheers Bar are hybrid sports bars which also do a selection of food and drinks.

The Metro Hassakan is just one of the trendy eateries on the riverside which serves great food, coffees and cocktails. 

Throughout the area of Sangkat Phsar Kandal Ti Muoy, there are some mid range and budget hotels which are also known for their dining options. Le Moon is probably one of the better ones and also underwent renovations in 2020.

On St.13, popular NGO Friends International converted a space called Futures Factory in 2019-2020 and  has shops, cafes and eateries.

There are dozens and dozens of dining and drinking choices in Sangkat Phsar Kandal Ti Muoy, with new popular food and beverage locations constantly opening up.

Daun Penh, especially the area along the river and in Sangkat Phsar Kandal Ti Muoy, is well-known for having a vibrant entertainment scene. The district hosts the highest concentration of bars and similar establishments in Phnom Penh.

Street 172 comes alive at night, as the many pubs, bars and other entertainment joints in the area open their doors to customers, both locals and foreigners. The dancing, singing, and drinking last well until the morning. The strip of bars, restaurants and hotels appeal to backpackers and long term expats with a good variety of night time hangouts.

A number of bars also host open mic nights and live music sessions. Secrets Club on St 136 has an in-house band that plays most nights. 

There is also a healthy mix of LBGT friendly choices in Daun Penh including Blue Chilli Bar on St. 178 and Space Hair Salon on St 136.

The streets on 130, 136, 104 and some intersecting alleys are popular at nighttime with clubs, bars, karaoke and massage parlours. They are considered as less family-friendly but remain very popular throughout the week nights and on weekends and open til the early hours of the morning.

Quite a few of the places already mentioned also have fantastic rooftop dining and drinking options, which are also great for riverside and sunset views.

It is easy to reach Sangkat Phsar Kandal Ti Muoy from the Phnom Penh Airport. These are numerous options which include by bus, train, taxi, car or tuk-tuk. 

The most economical way is to take a bus, which can be taken for just $1 and takes around 30-45 minutes depending on the traffic. There is a direct bus from Phnom Penh International Airport to Kuntha Bopha Children’s Hospital, which is scheduled to depart every hour.

The fastest way is to take a taxi or tuk-tuk. It takes only 20-35 minutes to get from Phnom Penh Airport (PNH) to Wat Phnom, and the most popular way is to book by one of the ride-hailing apps. The apps are the best to get around the city and can be linked to your bank card or you can pay by cash. Remember to carry small denominations of Riel and US Dollars.

Sangkat Phsar Kandal Ti Muoy is a popular area in Phnom Penh and a key tourism hub. Its location close to the center of the city and proximity to many amenities and the rivers makes it popular among many locals and expats. 

There is a growing selection of condos but apartments along the riverside are sought after with many undergoing renovations and upgrades.
